Inamed acquires patent for inhalation of aspirin to treat virus infection
Gemuenden, Sep. 16, 2005. Germany based Inamed - Intelligent Aerosol Medicine today announced the
acquisition of exclusive rights for inhaled Aspirin to block the propagation of influenza viruses in the lung. The
technology has been developed and patented by a team of German scientists. The licence agreement gives
Inamed the possibility to market the patent worldwide and also to bring in Inamed?s technology for precise
and targeted drug delivery to the lung.
Dr. Gerhard Scheuch, founder and CEO of Inamed: "We are very happy about this acquisition, since we see
the immense medical need for a better influenza therapy. We are looking forward to a further fruitful
cooperation with this excellent research team."
Talks to possible investors and marketing partners have already been started, while the concrete partnering
strategy is still open. Scheuch: "We will decide in a short time frame whether to bring this project to a further
level by ourselves or make this a licensing business. Several options are possible and the next steps depend
on the feedback from our negotiations."
Combining the drug with Inamed's delivery technology can increase the market chances for Aspirin
considerably. As shown in other projects, controlled inhalation helps to reduce dose variability and so
leverages success probability within clinical projects.
About Aspirin inhalation
German researchers Stephan Ludwig (Muenster), Stephan Pleschka (Giessen) and Oliver Planz,
(Tuebingen) focused their research on influenza virus induced cellular signaling and found that especially
IKK and NF-kB are required for efficient influenza virus reproduction. Their work showed that Aspirin can
inhibit these important replication mechanisms, while being not toxic and not producing resistant virus
variants.
